Spanish restaurants awarded top spot

El Bulli, the world-famous Spanish restaurant was awarded top billing in theTop 50 World Restaurant Awards 2006, deposing the UK restaurant, The Fat Duck at Bray.

Spanish and French restaurants fared exceptionally well this year at the expense of Britain, where 14 restaurants in the Top 50 in 2005 became just six in 2006. The Top Ten restaurants were as follows;

3. Pierre Gagnaire (France)

4. French Laundry (USA)

5. Tetsuya (Australia)

6. Michel Bras (France)

7. Louse XV (France)

8. Per Se (USA)

9. Arzak (Spain)

10. Mugaritz (Spain)
