VALENCISO RESERVA 1998 ..... awarded Silver Medal in International Wine Challenge 2003.

Fri 5 Sep 2003

Valenciso Reserva Rioja Tinto 1998......the first wine produced by Compaņia Bodeguera de Valenciso, Haro, Spain.

With its unique "one cellar, one wine, one brand" approach, Compaņia Bodeguera de Valenciso only produces wine under the "Reserva" category of Rioja. Based in Haro, the capital of the Rioja Alta, Valenciso is the brainchild of Luis Valentin. Luis was for many years Managing Director of Bodegas Palacio, the bodegas which produces the famous Rioja Cosme Palacio but in 1998 he decided to establish his own company with his partner Carmen Enciso. Together they work with their winemaker, Alicia Eyaralar, who shares their preference for subtle and elegant wines.

Now, after a few years on the sidelines dictated by the unavoidable time and patience required to produce quality wine, Luis and Carmen are back. The Valenciso Reserva 1998 is the first example of their wine, a "modern" style reserva rioja, which has been receiving many accolades, including this latest silver medal from IWC.

Only produced in small volume (40,000 bottles) from 100% Tempranillo grapes, selected from old vineyards with low yields, the emphasis of Valenciso Reserva is on the fruit, with ageing in new French oak barrels (which are replaced every three years) instead of the more traditional American oak. This has produced a complex, delicate and less oaky wine than a traditional style rioja, but still displays the classic cinnamon and vanilla aromas typical of rioja, leading to fabulous structure in the mouth and rich fruit for the finish. So in its modern style, like all great wines, Valenciso still reflects the land and region from which it originates. Rioja!!!
