Wine consumption set to increase

Wed 13 Oct 2004

According to research by Datamonitor, UK wine drinkers are expected to increase their consumption of wine by 16% within the next four years. Consumption will rise from 16.6 litres to an average 19.3 litres per person per year, mainly at the expense of beer sales, which have fallen at a rate of 3% per year since 1998. This decline is attributed to the increasing popularity of restaurants and the growing consumption of wine at home, as well as the increasing amounts of women who now drink alcohol - women account for 55% of the UK wine market, compared with 24% of the beer market.
