Bodegas Penalba Lopez
Close to the town of Aranda, in the heart of the Ribera del Duero DO lies the Torremilanos estate, home of Bodegas Peñalba López, one of the few estate wineries in the region. Unlike the traditional Castillian custom where the vines are in the countryside and the winery in the town, Bodegas Peñalba López nestles in the hillside beneath their vines. Everything happens on the estate, even the barrels are made by their own cooper from oak which lies in great piles seasoning to perfection behind the winery.
Winemaking at the estate dates back to 1903, but in 1975 the estate was acquired by the Peñalba López family. Since then Pablo Peñalba and his wife Pilar Albéniz, together with their sons, have built a reputation for innovative and quality wines made from grapes grown on the 200 hectares of vineyards that now cover the hillsides surrounding the winery. The varieties are predominantly Tinto del País, but also include a number of non-native varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Although a thoroughly professional and innovative operation, Bodegas Peñalba López has maintained the friendly feel of a family run business. Visitors can tour the estate by prior arrangement and there is also a very comfortable hotel located within the bodega.
