Caves Fermi Bohigas
Situated in the valley of the river Anoia within the DO of Catalunya, only 35 minutes from Barcelona, Can Maciá is the historical name of the estate where the Bohigas wine cellar and vineyard is located. Documents going back as far as the early 14th century mention the importance of Can Maciá as a wine growing estate, and it has been owned by the current family for over four centuries. It was however, not until Joan Vives Gibert inherited the estate in 1933 that the first Cava, for which the estate is best known today, was released in 1936.

After the disruption of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) JM Bohigas, nephew of the founder, took over what his uncle had started and gave the Cava the name under which it is still made today, ‘Bohigas’. In 1973, Bohigas created the prestigious ‘Brut Nature’, and at present, Jordi and Josep Casanovas maintain the family traditions and the standards associated with this bodega.

With over 60 hectares of level land at a reasonable altitude, and watered by the river Anoia, Fermí Bohigas grow the Macabeo, Xarel.lo, Parellada and Chardonnay varieties of grape. Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cariñena are also grown on estates elsewhere that belong to the family.

In addition to Cava, Fermí Bohigas also produce white and red wine in limited quantities. The quality red wines age alongside the Cava in the cellars, more than 10m below the ground, in ideal constant temperatures, despite the hot Mediterranean surface temperatures.
